The World According to...

I've learned many things, mostly from television, movies, and video games. But that counts... right?

talking to my dad about my book

Me:
What bad thing should I make happen next to my protagonist?
Dad:
You could kill him.
Me:
I can't kill a 13 year old! That is going to far.
Dad:
13 year olds die tragically all the time.
Me:
I mean, he will die when the series ends, but I can't kill him now, that's too far. It is too tragic even for me.
Dad:
Didn't you have him get tortured?
Me:
Well... he didn't die, and it was with magic so it doesn't count.

Friendship in TKC Vol I: The Knowers

Jimmy:
Dude, when did you get brave?
Nate:
I am not being brave Jim, I am merely doing what is right. We are the good guys Jimmy. We are supposed to save our friends and stop evildoers. Remember when we were little kids and we played super heroes? Remember how we swore that if we were ever super heroes we would always do the right thing, we would always try and save the world, Jim, we can finally be the heroes that we pretended to be, we can finally be the super heroes we read about.
Jimmy:
But super heroes aren’t real Nate.
Nate:
I would have said the same thing about the supernatural world several months ago and look where we are now. If I have learned anything in the last couple of months, it is this, Stella is a great friend, and you do anything for your friends. I am going to save Stella because that is the only possible thing I can think to do right now, not because I am being brave, or because I am acting stupid, but because Stella is my friend and you never leave friends behind.

The Knower Chronicles Vol V: The First Demon (Nate's and Stella's argument)

Stella:
You are the most magnanimously unforgiving person I know!
Nate:
That doesn't even make sense.
Stella:
It makes enough sense to be true about you.
Nate:
Do you even know what magnanimous means?
Stella:
Very generous or forgiving, especially toward a rival or someone less powerful than oneself.
Nate:
Then how can I be magnanimously unforgiving?
Stella:
Because... you're the biggest oxymoronic human in history!
Nate:
No matter what I do I can never please you!
Stella:
Because you are a man, everything you do is stupid.
Nate:
Well, everything you do never makes any sense.
Stella:
That's because I am a woman!

English class

What an English professor thinks:
It is clear why the author made the curtains blue. It was a time in his life full of depression and the protagonist is clearly sad in this scene, the blue curtains are meant to signify depression and sadness.
What I think:
Dude probably just wanted to make the curtains blue.
What the author was thinking:
Hmmm, what color should I make the curtains?

Nathaniel Spectre in Vol IX of the Knower Chronicles

Gabe:
Would you really sacrifice the lives of six billion people just to save one?
Nate:
Stella is worth more to me then every life in the whole of creation.
Gabe:
One person can't mean that much.
Nate:
It is when you love them. I will save Stella, I always have, and I always will. if that means that I must open the Mouth of Hell and bring on the Apocalypse, then so be it.
Gabe:
You are the craziest being that I have ever meant.
Nate:
Love makes you crazy, besides I'm not the first guy to go into Hell looking for the woman he loves.
